How Do I Share My Faith?

Start with your story. You don't need a seminary degree to tell people what God did for you.

A lot of Christians have faith, but they never share their faith. And the reason we share it is simple: people need it, and without Jesus, people are lost. "How are they to hear without someone preaching?" (Romans 10:14 ESV).

After Jesus set a man free from demons, the man begged to go with Him. Jesus said no: "Go home to your family, and tell them everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been" (Mark 5:19 NLT). He didn't send him to school first. He sent him home with a story.

So organize yours around three questions:

  1. Who were you before Jesus?

  2. How did you meet Jesus?

  3. What's changed since?

Then look for openings in everyday conversations. In John 4, Jesus was tired and sitting by a well when a Samaritan woman came to draw water. He asked her for a drink, and before long they were talking about living water and eternal life. He took a normal conversation and turned it toward God. You can do the same thing at work, at the ballfield or in line at Chick-fil-A.

You might be thinking, "But what do I say when I get there?" Keep it simple. Cover three things:

  1. Sin. We've all missed God's standard. "For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God's glorious standard" (Romans 3:23 NLT).

  2. What Jesus did. Sin has to be paid for, and Jesus paid for it in our place. He died, and three days later He rose from the dead.

  3. Our response. One day we'll all stand before Him. So hear the gospel, believe it, and repent.

"What if they ask something I can't answer?" Say, "Great question. I don't know, but I'll find out." (This website might help.) You're not responsible for saving anyone. That's the Holy Spirit's job; He's the one who convicts (John 16:8). Your job is to be faithful. "Always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect" (1 Peter 3:15 ESV).

And if you're not ready to explain it yourself, invite them. The woman at the well ran back to town and said, "Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did!" (John 4:29 NLT). Whether we tell people about Jesus or bring them to church where they can hear about Him, we're helping people find God.
