Is Hell Real?

Yes. I wish I could tell you otherwise, but Jesus talked about hell more than almost anyone in the Bible, and He talked about it because He didn't want anyone to go there.

Here's how Scripture describes it:

  • Fire. John the Baptist said Jesus would burn the chaff "with never-ending fire" (Luke 3:17 NLT). Revelation calls it "the fiery lake of burning sulfur" (Revelation 21:8 NLT).

  • Darkness. Jesus called it "outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth" (Matthew 8:12 NLT).

  • Separation from God. People there are "forever separated from the Lord and from his glorious power" (2 Thessalonians 1:9 NLT).

  • Forever. "These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life" (Matthew 25:46 ESV). There's no purgatory, and you don't just stop existing.

Now, here's a nuance that matters. God rules over hell. Nothing exists outside His authority, including that place. But His presence, His nearness and His goodness, isn't experienced there. And that's the worst part of hell. "In your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore" (Psalm 16:11 ESV). Every good thing we've ever enjoyed flows from His presence. Take that away and there's no peace, because He is our peace. There's no comfort, because He is the Comforter. There's no love, because God is love. And there's no light, because God is light. No more relationships, no more second chances. Only pain, regret and isolation.

You might be thinking, "Okay, but isn't Satan in charge down there with a pitchfork?" Nope. That's a cartoon. Satan doesn't rule hell. God does. Hell isn't Satan's kingdom. It's his punishment. Jesus called it "the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels" (Matthew 25:41 ESV). It was never built for you.

The bigger question most people ask is, "How can a loving God send people to hell?" Fair question. Here's how I'd answer it. We tend to think people are basically good and deserve good things. But there's no such thing as a good person. "None is righteous, no, not one" (Romans 3:10 ESV). God is perfectly loving, but He's also perfectly just. If God let sin into heaven, it wouldn't be heaven anymore. When sin enters, death enters. In a way, the most loving thing God can do is protect heaven from sin.

And He didn't just lock the door. He opened another one. Jesus took the punishment we deserved so we wouldn't have to. Someone is paying for your sin. You can pay it, or you can let Jesus pay it.

In Luke 16, Jesus tells a story about a man in hell. He asks for a drop of water, and then he begs for someone to go warn his five brothers, "so they don't end up in this place of torment" (Luke 16:28 NLT). If someone in hell could talk to you, that's what they'd say: "Don't come here."

So here's mine: Don't go there. You don't have to. And if you know Jesus, don't keep Him to yourself.
