Does My Life Have a Purpose?

Yes. And it's probably simpler than you think. We tend to make our calling about our profession, but it's really about people.

"For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost" (Luke 19:10 ESV). Then Jesus prayed to the Father, "As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world" (John 17:18 ESV). What Jesus came to do, you and I get to keep doing.

If you boiled the whole Christian life down, it would be this: follow Jesus and help others follow Jesus. See Him and show Him. Love Him and lead others to Him. Know Him and make Him known. Whatever your season of life, whatever your job, wherever you live, your purpose is the same. If you're a teacher, a police officer, a stay-at-home mom or a CEO, you use your influence and relationships to point people to Jesus. Your assignment is way more about a what than a where.

Back when I worked at a church in Baton Rouge, I led 10 to 12 mission trips a year with our interns. A lot of them had never left the state. By the end of almost every trip, students would come up to me and say, "I think I'm called to the mission field." Very few of them actually ended up there. Were they wrong? I don't think so. For the first time in their lives, they'd put God first for a whole week and watched Him use them to help people. That was intoxicating. They probably weren't called to move overseas. But they were all called to live on mission.

"But I'm not the kind of person God uses." Gideon said the same thing. When God showed up, Gideon was hiding in a winepress. The angel said, "Mighty hero, the Lord is with you!" (Judges 6:12 NLT). Gideon basically said, "I think you have the wrong guy. My clan is the weakest in the whole tribe, and I am the least in my entire family!" (Judges 6:15 NLT). As if God needed the update. God isn't confused about who He picked. God doesn't call the perfect version of you. He calls you as you are, and walks with you until you become who He knows you'll be.

There are three things that usually keep people from their purpose:

  1. Insecurity. An insecurity is anything you believe about yourself that God sees differently. You fight it with what God says about you.

  2. Compromise. God told Gideon to tear down his father's idols first. You can't serve God and something else at the same time.

  3. Fear. "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind" (2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV). Fear prophesies what could happen as if it's guaranteed to happen. Sometimes you just have to do it afraid.

So what's your next step? Send that text. Invite that friend. Pray with that co-worker. Your purpose is probably sitting next to you at work.
